Lockport grew up around the Illinois & Michigan Canal, platted in 1837 as the canal commissioners' headquarters. Downtown still shows it — blocks of locally quarried limestone buildings, like the 1838 Gaylord Building, make it one of the best-preserved canal towns anywhere.
