Serving Hometown, Illinois

Postwar duplexes, 75 years on

Hometown is one of Chicagoland's true originals — a planned community that developer Joseph E. Merrion built on 300 acres of prairie starting in 1949, with two-bedroom duplex ranches priced at $8,500 for returning GIs. About 1,500 of those duplexes still stand in the half square mile between 87th Street, Cicero, Pulaski, and Southwest Highway, and the city has kept its compact, walkable postwar character since incorporating in 1953. Those homes are now past 75 years old, and the windows, doors, and siding that came with them have done their time.

Excel is headquartered at 8049 185th Street in Tinley Park and serves Hometown as part of our Chicagoland service area — windows, doors, bath, and siding, since 1982. For duplexes this age, that usually means custom-measured Soft-Lite vinyl windows to replace drafty originals, a ProVia entry door, or a bath rebuilt in Onyx or BCI solid surface sized to a compact postwar floor plan. Because nearly every Hometown house predates 1978, it matters that Excel is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm. Same crews, job after job, and a 5-year labor warranty on the work. Consultations are free and happen at your kitchen table.

Hometown — common questions

Reviewed August 2026

Does Excel really serve Hometown?

Yes — Hometown is part of our Chicagoland service area. We're headquartered in Tinley Park, and we schedule free in-home consultations across the southwest suburbs, including Hometown. One call confirms your date.

Who actually does the installation?

The same installation crews, job after job — not a rotating cast off a day-labor board. They know our products and our standards, and our 5-year labor warranty stands behind their work.

How much will my project cost?

It depends on the product and the size of the job, so we don't quote blind. The in-home consultation is free: we measure, show you the options, and leave a clear written proposal — no pressure. Financing is available; ask about options.

Can you replace windows in a Hometown duplex with a shared wall?

Yes. Window, door, and siding work stays on your side of the property — a shared wall doesn't complicate the job. We custom-measure each opening, since postwar duplexes rarely match modern stock sizes, and Soft-Lite builds each window to those measurements. The consultation happens in your home, it's free, and you'll get a firm quote for your unit — no need to involve the neighbors.

My house was built around 1950. Does that change how a window install works?

It changes the prep, not the outcome. Homes built before 1978 call for lead-safe work practices, and Excel is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm. Expect careful containment and cleanup around each opening. Beyond that, the process is the same as any replacement: exact measurements, windows built to fit, and installation by the same crews, job after job — backed by our 5-year labor warranty.

Can you convert a small Hometown bathroom from tub to shower?

That's what compact postwar baths are made for. A low-threshold shower in Onyx or BCI solid surface uses the same footprint as the original tub, so nothing gets cramped — and stepping over a tub wall stops being part of your day. Grab bars, a built-in seat, and Moen fixtures go in where you want them. Most conversions wrap up in days, not weeks.
