A planned English town, filled in after the war
Westchester started as Samuel Insull's idea of a model English town. He bought roughly 2,200 acres of farmland in 1924, laid out streets with English names, and put up a handful of brick, stucco, and timber homes before the Depression stopped the plan cold. The village really filled in after the war, jumping from about 4,300 residents in 1950 to over 18,000 by 1960. That boom left the mix you see today: brick bungalows, Georgians, ranches, and split-levels on quiet blocks, with the rare black-soil grassland of Wolf Road Prairie holding one corner of town.
