Barrington's core is one of the largest collections of old frame houses in Illinois. The Historic District's Queen Annes, Italianates, and Craftsman homes went up mostly between 1860 and 1930, within walking distance of the Catlow Theater and the Metra Union Pacific Northwest stop on Spring Street. Push outward and the housing changes decade by decade: late-1950s ranches in Jewel Park off Route 59, 1960s-and-'70s houses in Fox Point near Ela Road, then the larger subdivisions that filled in through the 1980s and '90s. Almost nothing here is standard-sized, and most of it has earned some upkeep.
